Via bike to Budapest

After our Icelandic adventures we wanted to start into new ones. So we started by end july to cycle down the Danube Cycling Path from a place near Sigmaringen (about 1 hour by train from Tübingen) to Budapest down the river Danube. After the first stage we arrived in Ulm - the town with the highest church steeple in the world.

Unfortunately one of our team members had to leave us two days later. After some smaller bike damages (we had to repair two holes and to change one complete wheel) we enjoyed several nice Bavarian cities like Dillingen, Straubing and Deggendorf. But our personal highlights were Regensburg (the Regensburgers call it "the northmost city of Italy, see below) and Passau.

Straubing is famous for its fabulous Agnes-Bernauer-Torte which we tried in this café.

Passau is the city of the three rivers. Here the Inn is flowing into the Danube and - coming from the alps - turning its colour from brown into turquoise for several kilometers.

The nicest part of the trip was between Passau and Linz. Directly behind the border to Austria the Danube is entering massive gneises and granites and is therefore flowing forth and back. In case of the Schlögener Schlinge it is turning by 180° - at least for several hundreds of meters.

We also met several corsair on the Danube - fortunately he was a friendly one.

The Austrian monastry of Melk was blinding us with its baroque grandeur. Therefore its builders destroyed all of the older parts. :-(

The Wachau is a beautiful and hilly area between Melk an Vienna - and is famous for its winem fruits and schnapps - and its mild climate.

We stayed for four days in Vienna and enjoyed the cultural life of the city. We went to the opera (Mozart´s "Zauberflöte") and visited several museums. In the end we said goodbye to two of our group who had to go back home.

After leaving Vienna Christine and I went to Bratislava in Slovakia - and one day later to Hungary on the southern part of the Danube.

Cycling paths are very bad in Hungary. So we decided to leave the danube for a moment and use some calmer roads in the mountains - and to visit several nice cities in this area like Tata.

Budapest is a great city. We can leave the bikes at my relatives - and enjoy ourselves after this big trip. After four days in town we leave Budapest - and see big fireworks for the national holidays from the train.

We made it! After 1.300 kilometers we are proud that we decided to do this trip. We made 50 to 95 kilometers per day and cycling was not bad due to very nice wheather during the whole time.
